Types of Base Oil Offered
The American Petroleum Institute (API) classifies base oils into five categories (API 1509, Appendix E), with the first three groups being refined from petroleum crude oil.
Group I
Group I base oils contain less than 90% saturates, more than 0.03% sulfur, and have a viscosity index between 80 and 120. Their operating temperature range is from 32 to 150°F. These oils are produced using a solvent-refining process, which is relatively simple compared to modern refining techniques.
Group II
Group II base oils have more than 90% saturates, less than 0.03% sulfur, and a viscosity index of 80 to 120. They are typically made using hydrocracking, a more advanced refining process than that used for Group I.
The fully saturated hydrocarbon molecules in Group II oils provide better antioxidation properties and a clearer color. While they are generally more expensive than Group I oils, they have become very common and are now priced close to Group I.
Group III
Group III base oils also have more than 90% saturates, less than 0.03% sulfur, but feature a viscosity index above 120. These oils undergo even more severe hydrocracking, with higher pressure and heat, to produce a purer base oil.Â
Although derived from crude oil, Group III oils are sometimes referred to as synthesized hydrocarbons. Like Group II, they are increasingly prevalent in today’s market.
