Group III base oils go through the most advanced refining process among mineral oils. Even though they are not fully man-made, they still perform well in many ways and have a stable, uniform structure. Because of this, Base Oil 8-CST is often mixed with additives and sold as synthetic or semi-synthetic oils. They have a viscosity index above 120 and contain less than 0.03% sulphur.

It is often mixed into industrial and car lubricants and functional fluids and used to improve low-viscosity base oils.
